Meet Mike

My childhood is a story of poverty, abuse, and perseverance. As a current Board Member, I use what I learned growing up to ensure that our children receive the education, opportunities, and help they need and deserve.

Born in Washington, DC, I attended Randall Highland Elementary School in Southeast DC until my family moved to Prince George's County. The next couple of years were traumatic as my father had a severe mental illness, which led him to emotionally and physically abuse my mother and me. My parents were German immigrants, and my dad returned to Germany when I was 11.

Then, it was just my mother and me. Mom did not have formal skills or training, but she had an incredible work ethic. She worked, and we survived on food stamps, welfare, and donations from our church. My mother stressed the importance of education, and I graduated high school and attended Prince George's Community College and later the University of Maryland, College Park. I earned a degree in electrical engineering and interned with the Navy in 1984. This opportunity turned into a successful 38-year career.

Working for the Navy, I had opportunities that I never dreamed about as a kid. I traveled all over the country and to places worldwide, serving the defense department. Not only did I grow technically, but I learned how to interact with people from all walks of life and backgrounds. As a Board Member, I use the skills I learned during my career (as Covey says in his seven habits for a highly successful people) to "seek first to understand." I managed multi-million-dollar programs working with people from various backgrounds and skill sets. This experience gives me an understanding of the magnitude of the school system budget, working together, and our students' needs.

I continue to be passionate about Charles County Public Schools, and collaborating with people has allowed me to find ways to expand what CCPS offers for students, educators, and staff. I am running for another term to continue sharing my experience and history while moving CCPS in a positive direction.

I continue to volunteer and contribute to non-profit organizations in Charles County as I have since moving here in 1993. My upbringing and journey in life continue to influence my desire to commit to helping all children receive all the OPPORTUNITIES they DESERVE.
